- Big Hearts, Full Plates: Parkview Potjiekos Day Breaks Records for Community Impact
JOHANNESBURG,06 August 2025 What a day! The fires burned brightly, and so did the community spirit as Parkview’s George Hay Park played host to what is now being celebrated as the biggest and best Nicarela Potjiekos Competition yet.
With over 40 pots bubbling away, the real story was the phenomenal public response. From early morning setup to the last spoonful served, the park was buzzing with the kind of energy only this beloved event can generate.
“We are overwhelmed by the turnout, generosity and community spirit,” said Daneel Jordaan, Chairman of the Nicarela Charity. “Every plate sold helps us make a tangible difference to those who need it most – and this year, the support truly blew us away.”
Record-Breaking Results:
- Over 2,300 potjie meals sold – a more than 50% increase from last year
- Beverage sales surged by nearly 60%
- Nicarela-run food stands doubled their takings
- Independent food vendors also reported excellent trade throughout the day
While final figures are still being tallied, early indications suggest a new fundraising record – funds that will be directed directly to education, skills or resources that will sustainably change the trajectory of beneficiaries’ and their families’ lives.
Adding even more spice to the day was our incredible panel of judges, whose palates are as sharp as their passion for food is deep. This year’s pots were expertly tasted by a team that included 5FM’s Nick Hamman, culinary doyenne Marina Appelbaum, flavour trailblazer Warren Murley, neighbourhood restaurateur Nick Panayiotou, food-education champion Nobuhle Mthethwa, and Ebie du Toit of The Pot Luck Club Joburg. Their enthusiasm, generosity, and love of local flavour made the judging experience as memorable as the dishes themselves.
The day’s success was made possible by a dedicated network of:
- Passionate potjie competitors who bring creativity, generosity and serious flavour.
- Sponsors whose contributions help keep the event free and festive.
- Volunteers who show up before sunrise and stay long after the fires die down.
- Public supporters who turn up in their thousands, eat generously and share joy.
From kids enjoying jumping castles to adults raising a glass in the beer tent, from “Best Gees” award moments to perfect potjie tastings – this was a day of community at its most joyful and generous.
“The Parkview Potjiekos Competition is more than just a fundraiser – it’s a celebration of togetherness,” said Jordaan. “Our heartfelt thanks go to every single person who helped stir the pot this year.”
