Excellent Wireless Range and Capable of User Calibration, April 23, 2013

The Ambient Weather WS-07 is a top notch device at a nice price. I actually have three similar devices in my house. The others are known name brands in the weather industry and I think this one tops them all.

    1) This device has very large, bold numerals that can easily be read across the room. Only one of my other devices is this easy to read from as far away and it is almost a foot in width! The way this device is so readable is by displaying the readings from the main sensor for a period and then rotating through displaying the other sensors. Even though the WS-07 comes with one remote device it can support up to eight. However, waiting for the readings for eight remotes and the main reading to rotate through the display would be painfully slow. If you want more than the one remote included with the unit, I would not recommend more than one additional remote.

    2) The WS-07 has great wireless range. I currently have the remote unit on the 1st floor at one end of a large house and the main unit is on the 2nd floor at the diagonally opposite end of the house. The reception has been flawless over that distance of ~75-80ft going through about 5 walls and the ceiling.

    3) One of the biggest surprises for me is the User’s Manual. The norm for a device like this is a barely readable 2-3 page manual. The WS-07 comes with a professionally written 10 page manual that covers all features in excellent and lucid detail. I was surprised in reading the manual to find that both humidity and temperature for the main and remote sensors can be calibrated. This is a rare feature in low cost weather devices.

I see that the buyer has the option to purchase directly from Ambient for $19.99+$8.50 shipping or Amazon Prime customers can purchase it for $29.04. I have purchased other weather devices from Ambient and know that a direct purchase gets me UPS Ground shipping from Arizona which takes a week to arrive on the east coast. As an Amazon Prime customer, I would definitely opt for paying the additional $0.55 to get 2-day shipping.

I can definitely recommend this device. If the WS-07 is not exactly what you are after, I would recommend a trip to Ambient Software’s website. As far as I know they are the largest Internet retailer of weather instruments. Overall their selections and pricing are excellent. They have quite a variety of devices in this same basic price range.

Full disclosure: This product was received for no charge in exchange for an unbiased review.

Easy to Use, Accurate, Great Value!, April 19, 2013

This review is from: Ambient Weather WS-07 Big Digit 8-Channel Wireless Thermo-Hygrometer (Misc.)
I am a weather hobbyist, and have been running a Davis station from my home for over 7 years. The WS-07 from Ambient has made a very nice addition to my local station.

The standard package comes with the base/display unit and one remote sensor. The display requires 4 AAA batteries and the sensor requires two AAA batteries (none included). It is possible to have up to a total of eight remote sensors, making this package very flexible in displaying temperature and humidity in a variety of remote locations. The console also contains sensors, so one can immediately see conditions at the console location (typically indoors).

With the press of a button the console can be set to display indoor only, remote only, a particular remote sensor, or all of the above, rotating through the group at five second intervals. Remote sensors update the console every sixty seconds, and the whole setup is, of course, wireless. If necessary, the sensors can be calibrated against a known standard (a very nice feature), but I found that unnecessary. In comparisons with my existing equipment the temperature was never off by more than 1°F, well within the published specs.

Speaking of setup, I was up and running in less than five minutes. The manual is complete and easy to understand, covering everything from simple battery installation to all the various options available on the display.

In addition, indicators next to the temperature and humidity readings show the rate of change for these items – increasing, decreasing, or steady. Humidity also displays an additional icon indicating Dry, Comfortable, or Wet.

While the base unit itself is compact, the digits are BIG and BOLD, making the display very easy to read from across the room. Both temperature and humidity are shown, and the temperature can be displayed in either Fahrenheit or Celsius.

All in all a very nice unit, a very nice price, and a welcome addition to my current station.

Easy to read display, and accurate readings, April 19, 2013

This review is from: Ambient Weather WS-07 Big Digit 8-Channel Wireless Thermo-Hygrometer (Misc.)

I received the Ambient Weather WS-07 Big Digit 8-Channel Wireless Thermo-Hygrometer a bit over a week ago. As advertised, the display is BIG, with 1.25″ characters that can easily be read across a room. I have had a few other wireless thermometers over the years, and usually have to get close to the display to read the temperature. No need for that with this unit. As long as there’s a reasonable amount of light in a room, you’ll be able to read it.

The Ambient Weather WS-07 uses the 433.9 MHz frequency to transmit data from the remote sensor to the display. This seems to be working very well in my house. I have an all-electric home with no basement, so all of the wiring goes between the floors. This has caused endless problems with wireless devices over the years, including cordless phones, cell phones, wifi, wireless weather stations, etc. However, no matter where I placed the WS-07’s remote sensor or the display in my house, it has been able to remain connected. The only time I had any signal problem was when I moved the sensor outside and mounted it on my Davis Vantage Pro2 weather station instruments for accuracy testing. This caused the display to lose signal for about five minutes. It eventually re-connected and is now working fine. This is despite having the display setting on a cabinet with two printers (one wireless capable), a scanner, two web cameras, a cordless telephone base station, and my wireless router. If it can work there, I have no doubt that it can work anywhere on my property!

I also have a La Crosse Technology WS-7014CH-IT Indoor & Outdoor Digital Thermometer w/ Indoor Humidity, Forecaster, Atomic Clock which uses the 915 MHz frequency, and the Ambient WS-07 does not have any transmission conflict with the LaCrosse unit. I had both product’s remote sensors and displays next to each other without any interference. I’ll be getting an additional remote sensor for the Ambient Weather WS-07, as the LaCrosse doesn’t have much range in my situation. It frequently loses connection with the outdoor sensor I have 40 feet away.

Speaking of remote sensors, one excellent feature of the Ambient Weather WS-07 is the ability to add remote sensors or change batteries without having to reset the display. Every other wireless thermometer that I’ve used requires removing batteries from the display and all sensors, then installing batteries in a certain order over a specific time to get everything communicating. This can be inconvenient when you have the display and three remote sensors, and one sensor’s batteries die. With the Ambient Weather WS-07, you would only need to replace the batteries in the one remote sensor, it is quickly recognized by the display, and you’re done!

As far as accuracy is concerned, I’ve tested the Ambient Weather WS-07 against my Davis Instruments Vantage Pro2 weather station and my Kestrel 4500 Weather Tracker. These are both serious amateur or professional weather instruments, and very accurate when properly located. Comparing temperature with WS-07 remote sensor next to my VP2 outdoor sensor, and the WS-07 display next to my VP2 console, I was pleasantly surprised at the results. Both the indoor and outdoor temperatures were accurate to less than 1′ (0.7′ outdoors and 0.5′ indoors.) The indoor humidity differed by 1%, and the outdoor humidity by 3%, both within the stated specifications of the Ambient Weather WS-07. I had similar results with the Kestrel 4500. The Ambient Weather WS-07 has the unique capably to adjust the readings to match a known temperature or humidity, but I didn’t find this necessary. Still, this is a feature not found on other units I’ve owned.

As noted by other reviewers, the accuracy of the remote sensor and the main display can be adversely effected by how and where they are mounted. Placing the outside sensor in direct sunlight or above your black asphalt drive will result in artificially high temperature readings. Suspending the outside sensor in a shaded area with plenty of air circulation will give you the best results. And as noted by other reviewers, the Ambient Weather WS-07 has the capability to add up to 8 remote sensors, setting the display to loop through the various sensor readings, temperature and humidity trend, and more.

I recommend giving the Ambient Weather WS-07 a try. I was going to give this to my elderly mother to use, since the display is so easy to read. But the wireless range is so much better than my LaCrosse unite, I’m keeping it for myself! Thanks to Ambient Weather for the opportunity to test this unit under their beta program. I received the item free…

Another great book by Lincoln Peirce. It’s a great book telling a story of how P.S. 38 turns 100 years old and how they celebrate the centennial

This review is from: Big Nate Lives It Up (Hardcover)
I just got this book today and I couldn’t put it down, I read it in just one hour. I would give it a 9.3 out of 10. I gave it a 9.3 because at some points I just found the new character annoying and he was just always there, following Nate. I didn’t find it as funny as the other the other books, but I did find the rest of it fantastic and it did have an amazing ending, (and no I will not spoil it) so overall I decided to give it 5 stars. So in conclusion I really enjoyed the read and it kept me hooked throughout the entire novel and I am super excited for the next Big Nate book coming out which is called Big Nate Blasts Off. Thank you for reading this review and I hoped it helped, bye.
