alisterr.com Examines the Changing Rules of Digital Discovery

KOLKATA, India, Sept. 26, 2026 — The way people discover a business, product or service is changing as search engines, marketplaces, directories, media sources and AI systems increasingly contribute to what information users encounter.

Alisterr.com is examining that change through its editorial work on digital discovery, with a focus on how businesses are represented across different online systems and what happens when those systems use different rules, formats and sources.

The issue extends across several types of businesses. An ecommerce seller may need to manage product information across multiple sales channels. A local business may be represented through its website, business profiles, directories and reviews. An author may appear through retailer listings, search results and publishing platforms. A service business may have information spread across its website, professional profiles, directories and media coverage.

In each case, the business controls some of the information but not necessarily every place where that information appears.

Google states that information in Business Profiles can come from the business itself, publicly available web content, licensed third-party data and user contributions. Google can also update profile information when information from other sources differs from what a business has provided.

Product discovery presents a similar issue. Google documents that product information such as price, availability, shipping and other details can be used to create richer search results when the relevant information is provided in a supported format.

For Alisterr founder Snigdha Basu, the question is not simply where a business appears, but how information about that business is carried from one digital system to another.

“A business can provide the same basic facts in several places and still be represented differently,” Basu said. “The interesting part is understanding what each system is using, what the business can control and where inconsistencies begin.”

Alisterr’s recent editorial work has examined this issue through topics including ecommerce product information, marketplace search, business citations, local discovery, cross-platform consistency and AI-driven search.

The company’s research into DTC brands, for example, examines the relationship between a brand’s website, business profiles, directories and marketplace presence, with an emphasis on keeping core business information accurate across relevant sources.

Its work on local discovery looks at the sources used to assemble business information and the need to maintain accurate underlying details across those sources.

Other work examines how ecommerce businesses need to adapt product information to the requirements of individual platforms while retaining accurate product facts. Recent analysis has also addressed changes to marketplace listing requirements and the effect those changes can have on product titles and search information.

The subject is also becoming relevant to AI-driven discovery. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode use existing search systems and that established SEO practices continue to apply, including making important content accessible, keeping structured data aligned with visible content and maintaining current product and business information.

Basu brings a journalism background to the work. Before founding Alisterr.com, she worked in business journalism with publications including Entrepreneurs Today and Times Today and interviewed more than 500 people across businesses and industries.

Her current editorial focus starts with a similar reporting question: what information is available, where did it come from and how is it being presented?

Alisterr.com plans to continue examining digital discovery across ecommerce, local business, publishing, professional services and other areas where businesses depend on online systems to represent their products, services and identity.
