Africa Now Festival Brings Exciting Fusions of Musical Styles
The Africa Now festival returns to the Apollo Theater, bringing you some of the hottest musicians from across Africa. Here's your chance to discover artists that are rarely heard in the U.S. This annual concert is always a highlight of the Apollo's season, and this year's show promises to be no exception. You've never heard blues-rock quite like Niger's Bombino plays it, melding his cultural roots with "snatches of Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix and even Jerry Garcia" (No Depression magazine). Called "Africa's most internationally successful young band" by The Guardian, Afro-fusion band Mokoomba mixes infectious, high-energy beats, funk grooves and instruments and Zimbabwe's Tonga musical traditions. Ghanaian singer-songwriter Jojo Abot creates a sultry blend of everything from electronica and afrobeat to jazz, soul and reggae. Alsarah and the Nubatones cap off the evening with their Nubian/Sudanese-inspired East-African retro-pop.
