Addicted to Sex? Everything You Need to Know

Sex addiction, or hypersexual disorder, is defined as an impulse control disorder that involves an obsession with sexual thoughts, feelings, and behaviours that interferes with daily life and causes distress or problems in relationships and work. A sex addict may engage in compulsive masturbation or cybersex, infidelity, exhibitionism, voyeurism and other sexual activities to feel pleasure, relieve stress, or escape from problems or painful emotions such as anxiety or depression. The need to engage in these types of behaviours becomes more important than work responsibilities, family commitments, friendships and health.

Diagnosis of Sex Addiction

According to the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), a person can be diagnosed with a sex addiction if they exhibit three or more of the following behaviours for at least six months:

  • Spends a great deal of time thinking about sex or engaging in sexual activities
  • Repeatedly engages in these activities despite negative consequences, such as relationship problems, job loss or financial ruin
  • Is unable to control their urges or behaviours
  • Engages in these activities even when they are aware that they are causing physical or emotional harm to themselves or others
  • Behaves compulsively toward sex despite knowing their current relationship or marriage is unhealthy because of their sexual behaviours.

If you are worried about yourself or someone close to you, it’s important to talk with your doctor and get professional help. Seek immediate medical attention in emergencies and don’t feel ashamed about seeking help—no one is alone in their struggle against addiction or compulsion.

How to Identify a Sex Addict

Sexual addiction, like any other addiction, is a chronic, progressive disease. It is characterised by compulsive sexual thoughts and behaviours that continue despite negative consequences. Someone who is addicted to sex may have difficulty controlling their urges and may engage in risky behaviours, such as unprotected sex. They may also lie or keep secrets to hide their activities from others. Sexual addiction affects both men and women. It can impact anyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender identity. If you think you or someone you know may be addicted to sex, it’s important to seek help from a qualified professional. Several effective treatments have been shown to help people overcome their compulsions. The sooner an individual gets help for their addiction, the better chance they have of overcoming it and stopping their compulsive behaviours.

What Are The Stages Of Recovery From Sex Addiction?

The first stage of recovery is admitting that you have a problem. This can be difficult, as sex addiction is often accompanied by feelings of shame and low self-worth. However, it is essential to face up to the problem to begin the healing process.

The second stage of recovery is entering a rehab facility that specialises in this type of addiction like Freeman House Recovery. This involves an intensive period of treatment, during which time you will learn how to identify triggers and cravings, deal with underlying issues that may have led to addiction in the first place, and explore ways to prevent relapse once you’ve completed treatment.

The third stage of recovery is maintaining your sobriety. If you return to old habits and ways of thinking, you’ll fall back into addiction very quickly. This means living a full life—including a healthy diet, regular exercise and plenty of sleep—while being on alert for cues that may point to an impending relapse.

The fourth stage of recovery is long-term sobriety. This begins with a period of 2–5 years during which you’ll be vigilant for relapse triggers and work on self-esteem and healing any underlying issues that may have led to addiction in the first place.

The fifth stage of recovery is maintenance. To maintain sobriety, you’ll need to continually challenge your negative thought patterns and confront triggers before they have a chance to influence your behaviour. With effort, you can ensure that a relapse doesn’t occur.

Lastly,  the sixth stage of recovery is finding true intimacy. When all other efforts fail, you may find yourself connecting intimately with a partner who loves and respects you unconditionally. Sex becomes less about using another person to fulfil your desires than it does about sharing pleasure in a mutually beneficial way.

Relapse Prevention Tips For Recovering Sex Addicts

  • If you’re in recovery from sex addiction, it’s important to be aware of the dangers of relapse.
  • One of the biggest dangers is combining sex addiction with substance abuse. This combination can be extremely dangerous and lead to a quick relapse.
  • To prevent this, it’s important to stay away from people and places that trigger your addiction.
  • You should also learn to identify your triggers and recognise when you are triggered.
  • Identifying your triggers will help you prepare for them in advance.

Steps to Take If You’re Considering Treatments For Sexual Compulsions

If you think you might have a problem with sexual compulsions, the first step is to talk to your doctor. They can help you figure out if your behaviours are normal or if they’re something more. You should also consider talking to a therapist. They can help you understand your compulsions and work on ways to manage them.

In some cases, medication may be recommended to help with sexual compulsions.  Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a type of treatment that helps people change unhealthy patterns of thinking and behaviour. CBT teaches skills that people can use when dealing with their compulsions, like how to avoid situations where their behaviour could take place.

Another option is group therapy. This type of treatment involves meeting with a group of people who are dealing with similar issues, either through their compulsions or because they have a loved one struggling with addiction. If you’re considering treatment for sexual compulsions, remember that it can be a long and challenging process. Don’t give up if you don’t see results right away. With time and dedication, you can treat your addiction or compulsion.
