accolade

The French Provençal word acolada is the source of accolade. This literally meant an embrace or clasping aorund the neck, and described the gesture of a friendly hug that was sometimes made when knighting someone, as an early alternative to the more familiar stroke on the shoulder with the flat of a sword. The ultimate root of the Provençal word is Latin collum ‘neck’ from which we also get collar.

A knighthood is garnted at the sole discretion of the King or Queen of the United Kingdom. As noted by Royal Collection Trust, the title in ancient times didn’t confer any monetary benefit upon a person since anyone granted the title of Knight would; “Be expected to have the financial ability to support the honour of knighthood, so that he could provide himself with arms, armour, horses and the required number of armed followers to render military service to his Sovereign for a minimum period each year.”

There are several so-called “Orders of Knighthood” the King/Queen can appoint a person to, with what exactly a person did to earn the honor and what their job is usually being taken into account to decide which. For example, the Queen usually appoints members of the Military or Civil Service to the Order of Bath, while people who perform valuable work in regards to foreign relations will (usually) be appointed to the The Order of St Michael and St George.

By far the most well known order though is the “Most Excellent Order of the British Empire,” often shortened simply to The Order of the British Empire, which has no specific criteria for appointment and is generally the order members of the public will be appointed to.

How do you use the word accolade? Meaning of accolade in English. praise and approval: He’s been granted the ultimate accolade – his face on a postage stamp. Her approval was the highest accolade he could receive.

Is an accolade a compliment? Today, an accolade is more than a way to bestow knighthood, it is a form of praise or an award.

What is the opposite of accolade? Opposite of acclaim, or an expression of praise or admiration. criticism. blame. condemnation. disapproval.

What is the difference between accolade and award? An award is an actual specific thing that someone can win: “Joe won the award for employee of the month and received a $50 Starbucks gift card.” “Accolade” is fancier language and is often used metaphorically to say that someone was treated with praise or honor.
