24 Years of providing spark in South Africa:
Hisense, supplier of affordable and high-quality electronic goods, is rapidly gaining traction across the continent’s business-to-business market, where it is already a leader within the consumer goods category.
While providing high-quality and affordable electronic goods across Africa during some of the world’s most challenging times, Hisense is also supporting the local economy through continued production and the support of communities.
“Despite the extreme pressure that this pandemic has put on us and all technology companies, we are as invested in our team and the country now as we have been for the last 24 years,” says Jerry Liu, Hisense Global General Manager Assistant, Hisense Middle East & Africa General Manager.
Founded in 1969, Hisense first entered South Africa in 1996, and today boasts a nationwide footprint with distribution to more than 3 000 chain stores and 500 home appliance stores. In 2019, one in four TVs or fridges sold in South Africa was a Hisense, while during the year, the brand manufactured more than 530 000 TVs, and 331 000 fridges.
Hisense has also made significant inroads in Africa, with products also being exported to 13 other African countries, including Namibia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana and Lesotho.
In 2013, Hisense set up its own plant in Atlantis outside of Cape Town, giving the local community a huge boost. Currently Hisense employs more than 800 people, and does training and social upliftment projects, contributing to the wellbeing of around 3 000 people in the community.
More recently, Hisense donated 4 000 masks, 1 000 bottles of hand sanitiser, two television sets, a microwave and a fridge to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital and fridges to a paediatric unit at Paarl Hospital.
Hisense also helped to co-found SITC Logistics, which partnered with China’s second-largest shipping company to ensure increased job opportunities for South Africans. Since this company’s development, SITC partnered with a local company, W&L Logistics, with the vision of supporting them too.
Unfortunately, their business was affected massively this year due to the pandemic, resulting in them closing their warehouse. Owner of W&L Logistics, Johan van Tonder, said “The co-operation with SITC brings new hope and new business. We plan to recruit more employees and buy vehicles to support new business.”
“As always, we remain committed to helping communities that need them, and look forward to many more years of production, innovation and investment,” says Liu.
