150th Anniversary of Winston Churchill’s Birth Sparks a Renewed Interest in Churchill Memorabilia.

Johannesburg, November 26, 2024: Winston Churchill was born on 30 November 1874, making this week a fitting moment to celebrate his life and legacy, from his years as a soldier and statesman to his leadership during the Second World War and beyond. In 2002, the BBC conducted a survey to crown the greatest Briton of all time, with Churchill taking the top spot. The 150th-anniversary is sparking a renewed interest in Churchill memorabilia, with unique collectable stamps and coins being issued.

The Royal Mail https://bit.ly/3V7klFS is issuing eight stamps to mark the 150th anniversary. The stamps feature powerful quotes and timeless images honouring one of Britain’s most significant leaders. In July 1965, Churchill was the first contemporary individual to be featured on a British stamp and has been on several issues since then.

Joining the array of organisations commemorating the 150th anniversary of Sir Winston Churchill’s birth, The Royal Mint has unveiled a special £2 coin  https://bit.ly/4i2QloH .This piece features Churchill’s iconic silhouette alongside his legendary declaration, “We shall never surrender.” The coin honours the legacy of one of Britain’s greatest leaders. It is a must-have for history and numismatic enthusiasts alike. Across decades, mints worldwide have struck coins commemorating the wartime leader, making Churchill a prominent figure in numismatic circles. The story begins in 1965, the year of Churchill’s passing. The Royal Mint issued the world’s first commemorative crown featuring a commoner, showcasing Churchill’s profile opposite Queen Elizabeth II.  Fast forward to 2015, when the Royal Mint celebrated 50 years since Churchill’s death with a particular £5 coin. Featuring an engraving of Churchill’s iconic portrait, this coin merged modern minting techniques with historical reverence. That same year, South Africa’s Mint paid tribute with a Winston Churchill Launch Set.

During the Second Boer War (1899–1902), Winston Churchill initially travelled to South Africa as a war correspondent. He became famous for his dramatic capture and subsequent escape from Boer forces and his contributions as a commissioned officer with the South African Light Horse regiment. His actions in battles, such as Diamond Hill in June 1900, earned him recognition, including the Queen’s South Africa Medal.

Rael Demby, CEO of The South African Gold Coin Exchange & The Scoin Shop, says, “The 2015 Winston Churchill Launch Set is a limited-edition collection that includes a 1 oz gold Krugerrand with a commemorative mintmark and a 1 oz silver coin, blending Churchill’s legacy with South Africa’s heritage. This new release from the Royal Mint demonstrates incredible craftsmanship and artistry. We are proud to be the exclusive  South African distributor of products from The Royal Mint, one of the world’s most highly regarded numismatic institutions”.
