Poison by Lot Vekemans – Presented by Metro Arts and EG – a Africa interest event taking place on 2019-02-14 19:00:00 in Australia
Alone in a room at a cemetery are He and She. Bound, yet separated by the death of their son, they are face to face for the first time in years. A toxin has seeped into the soil. Long in the ground, the boy’s body will have to be disinterred and reburied somewhere safer. Two separate voices, two emotional lives and one shared story. Can He and She exhume their pain, along with their son’s remains, and move forward?
Lot Vekemans is Holland’s leading contemporary playwright. After winning the Taalunie Toneelschrijfprijs Award in 2010 for best new play, Poison has been translated into 15 languages, accrued awards all over Europe and has been produced in America, Russia, South America, and Mexico. Poison will also be premiering on stage in China and South Africa in the coming year, and there are plans for film adaptions in both Dutch and English.
The sparse text tackles the tough question of grief head-on with absolutely no artifice or spectacle. Vekemans reflects on the failures of language to bridge the gap between She and He. This, along with the central action – to wait—is pure Beckettian, while the central concept of “no exit’’ and “hell is other people,” points directly to Sartre. While embracing the methodology of both Beckett and Sartre, Vekemans adds her own unique spin.
