MyJHB - My Johannesburg Business and Telephone Directory

From one of the guys that brought you www.MyPE.co.za you get.........Yup, it's a no-brainer, http://www.MyJHB.co.za/.

The Business Directory arranged by product really looks like a winner in terms of information that can be found quickly and easily in a niche market.

URL submission is free and you do not need a web site, just a telephone number beginning with 011.

Have a look, too, at the free classified adverts at http://www.classifieds.MyJHB.co.za/.

Red Skin Care

Here is a site that we have spent a little bit of time on for the following reasons:

  • The update request took a while for the previous guardians to approve. They acceded to accepting the update request and then after the third time that the update was refused by them, they waited until we started getting heated and using four letter words before turning around and telling the business owner that they would release it when money outstanding was paid. WHY THEY NEVER SAID SO FROM THE WORD GO IS A MYSTERY!!
  • Now the site is a combined static / dynamic one with a blogging engine and RSS newsfeed to the Index Page.

Lessons learnt:

  • It is always the sites that you are doing on a shoe string that give you the most headaches.
  • Never assume that the client or his present hosting provider understands you completely.
  • When doing an update of a .co.za site name the client as the Owner.
  • Static sites are easier to cost, design and implement.
  • Dynamic Sites require a lot of ongoing maintenance, client training and cleaning up.
  • Make sure that you have a service agreement in place for any dynamic site.

Frank Collier Business Systems

Here is a nice twist on static vs dynamic pages.

This site has mainly static pages BUT propping the site up like bookends are a Blog allowing the owner to post stories around his chosen topic and the Index page which takes the RSS feed from the Blog and serves up juicy arachnid food on the index page as well.

Blog used - B2Evolution
RSS to Html Script obtainable from Feed for All

A neat way of allowing the owner to have control over a dynamic site without messing the code up too much.

Weed.co.za | Weed.co.za

Why is this site interesting?

Quite frankly, because of the name and the subject matter. I found this page - http://www.weed.co.za/st/content/dagga/ very interesting and informative, I suppose because I am a parent.

MyPE Search Engine Stats - September 2006

I know that we all love to see other peoples web site stats. Some of them are all lies, lies, lies and more damned lies, and some of them are just sections of the actual statistics put out as a teaser.

Be that as it may - the keyword statistics (that you can see by clicking on the title of this post) are of keywords that brought traffic to a City Community Site. Interesting enough to get a feel for what search terms are bring visitors - also a close look at stats such as these will quickly reveal if the web site indulges in spammy SEO techniques or not - you be the judge ............

My Addo

Hot on the heels of the succesful launch of www.zuurberg-inn.co.za comes www.MyAddo.co.za.

This is taking a real leap of faith and hoping that concentration on a really small niche market will reap dividends in the long run.

My Addo is a combination Community / Business / Travel concept. Hopefully there is a bit of built in redundancy to allow for growth to a forum and other Community type products.

Time Will Tell.

Stop Snoring

A function of our sedentary lifestyle and older age is that snoring becomes a factor. In our younger days our partners seem to find the fact that we snore, cute. Come to think of it, almost everything that one does during the first flush of love is considered cute, I have even heard some people reffering to their partners nose picking antics as CUTE.

Stop Snoring Piggy BoyWell with growing age and a return of brain cells to where they belong (above and not BELOW the neck) comes the growing realisation that your partner does NOT sound cute anymore, when the lawnmower starts snoring next to you .....

Violence and breaking chairs, along with quiet contemplation of murder are by now the order of the day.

So now this is why the Stop Snoring web site caught my eye. Take your little Piggy Snoring self off and go and get it fixed boyo - before your spouse cuts off all access to a little bit of slap and tickle.

Directions from Port Elizabeth to Addo, compliments of the Zuurberg Inn

Just for the man WHO DOES NOT ASK FOR DIRECTIONS. Yes, you know who you are!

The Zuurberg Inn web site has now released a comprehensive set of directions from Port Elizabeth Airport to Addo Elephant Park. The directions to the Addo Elephant Park and Zuurberg incorporate a detailed set of written directions, photographs of each intersection and landmark PLUS Global Positioning Satellite Waypoints for you to enter into your GPS.

And, if you still get lost, then there is absolutely no hope for you at all.

Book Accommodation at the Zuurberg Inn

An example of a niche affiliate site - taking good advantage of keywords in the domain name, title and page selling accommodation.

The actual Hotel site does not even feature in the first five pages of search engine results when using the search term 'zuurberg inn'.

When I found the actual site it was patently obvious why - two sets of frames, no meta tags, no keywords, old and in need of a revamp.

I would like to see how this site fares in the Search Engine Rankings.

www.Trades.co.za - South African Tradesmen

These guys promise all South African trademen a FREE web site and email address.

What is the catch?

ONLY that your domain name is not your own, although I see one or two FREE sites on the list that point to their own domain name and re-direct to the Trades.co.za site.

Pretty neat and clean sites that look well optimised to boot.

Rugby Search

Springbok Rugby - Rugby SearchQuite frankly I don't know why someone would want to search for and find information on Rugby, considering the bumpy road that South African Rugby is on.

The Rugby Search web site seems to be bucking the trend or is it "Showing a Finger!" and supporting South African Rugby.

You get two facets here:
1. A search box that only searches the Rugby Sites as shown and,
2. Listings of relevant Rugby Sites.

Search Box compliments of Eruekster whoi run what is termed a Swicki - i.e. a Search Wicki.

Actually, who cares, search for something and make Rugby Search display the results that you want it to.

My Cape Town

I am starting to see this site pop up all over the place.

Had a look at the directory and it really looks like nice - links are clean and STAND OUT. Not too many links on a page, easy to search.

The forum will need a bit of work to get people there and the gallery is a bit thin on images.

I really think the directory displaying addresses as well as phone, fax and cell numbers is a brilliant idea. I believe that if you ask nicely you can also get an additional 2500 HTML characters on the More Info link - lovely spider food. The direction that this Cape Town directory is going in seems to one that combines the best of traditional directories with a strong article component and a bit of a Content Management System thrown in.

And, yet, it still manages to look completely uncluttered.

Forgot to mention the weather forecast page - what a change from having to navigate past four or five screens and then seeing a synopsis. This one gives FOUR days of ACCURATE weather forecast for Cape Town AND Langebaan, above the fold and one click.

Help Win My Bet :: Index

The things that people will do to get visitors to their site.

In the forum on HelpWinMyBet.co.za you can now shamelessly promote your own web site as a thank you for visiting the site.

From the forum:

How can we thank you for visiting www.HelpWinMyBet.co.za? By allowing you to shamelessly promote your web site or business here. If your post takes up too much space, is obnoxious in the extreme or we don't like your product it will eventually get deleted. But, what have you got to lose - I double dare you.
