Now, I am sorry, but this just goes to prove that there are even DUMB people in Anerica.
A woman by the name of Theresa B. Bradley filed a lawsuit against Google for $250,000 for fraud and misrepresentation after they suspended her account for invalid clicks.
Theresa Bradley, owner of Brava Corp., alleges that her staff spent 100 hours placing and reviewing HTML code for Google AdSense on www.bravacorp.com. Once the code was placed, she asked Google to remove several competing AdSense advertisements, as per the AdSense user agreement. According to the complaint, Google then completely removed AdSense from Bradley's site and accused Bradley of violating AdSense policies by fraudulently clicking on advertisements.
Bradley denied clicking on the ads except to verify that the advertisers were not selling competing products.
Have a look at the Brava Corporation web site which carried the Google Ads HERE.
Just a quick look at the source shows missing meta tags, and a completely and utterly badly optimised web page - probably had no visitors and was forced to click on her own ads.
If she had spent any time at all researching the Google Tools available to her she would have seen a PREVIEW TOOL that would have helped her check for competitors.
What are her chances of winning?
Probably as much as the Springboks against the All Blacks on Saturday - not a snowballs chance in hell!
EDIT: Shit, I had to eat my words - the Springboks beat the All Blacks 21-20, I am wearing the green and gold again!
Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) allow you to seperate content and design, thereby making your web site FAR more search engine friendly and ALSO making your design far easier to manage and change INSTANTLY on a site wide basis.
Have a look at the Free Mail CSS HERE.
Here are some of the main benefits from using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS):
1. CSS saves your valuable time by creating layouts and NOT with the use of tables.
2. CSS frees you to create websites that automatically gain better search engine results.
3. CSS gives you total control of every aspect of your website by placing objects pixel perfect at places you really want to have them. And it allows you to do that within 10 seconds.
4. With CSS you only need ONE file to display your whole site design throughout your whole website and then this CSS file is automatically used over and over again by the browser to display the design for every single page the user visits.
5. CSS WILL make your site load faster, saving you and your visitor valuable bandwidth.
If you are anything like me when tackling something new, you want the following in place before you start:
1. A Visual Guide like a video or flash presentation,
2. A Practical Example,
3. Some free stuff,
4. A summary or cheat sheet.
5. A printable ebook to read (in bed or in the toilet!)
I found all of that, recently, on one web site: How To Master CSS.
Young Hilco van der Meer has put all of the following aids together to help mere mortals like us master Cascading Style Sheets (CSS):
The How To Master CSS course contains:
The book How To Master CSS, The How To Master CSS Training Videos (total of 1 hour, 22 minutes and 13 seconds), The Real-Time CSS Editor, CSS Resources, The History Of CSS, Using Hexadecimal Color Codes, The Code Archive, Six CSS Website Templates, Extra Lay-out Videos, CSS Cheat Sheet.
Visit How To Master CSS for more information.
Getting thousands of visitors to your web site is like sex without a climax - why bother?
Many webmasters focus on getting more traffic to their web sites. While getting visitors is very important, it is much more important to increase the conversion rate of your web site.
This article will tell you why improving your conversion rate will have a much higher effect on your web site than getting more traffic.
The conversion rate of your web site is the ratio of sales to visitors to your web site. If your web site gets 30,000 visitors per month and 300 of these visitors purchase something from your web site then your conversion rate is 1/100 or 1%.
What most web site marketers do is increase sales by getting more traffic:
For example, you could use IBP to improve the search engine rankings of your web site to get more visitors. Or you could run ads on Google AdWords to get 500 additional visitors per day.
That would be 15,000 additional visitors per month and a traffic increase of 50%. You have to invest a lot of time and money to get 50% more traffic. Is it worth it?
Let's say that you sell a product that costs $50. Before increasing the traffic to your web site, you had 300 sales per month = $15,000.
Now that you have 15,000 additional visitors per month, you'll make an additional $7,500 per month (Your conversion rate is 1%. That means that 150 of the 15,000 new visitors will buy the $50 product from you).
That means that you'll earn a total of $22,500 after getting more traffic to your web site.
That's not bad. However, depending on how you got that extra traffic (pay per click, search engine optimization, ads, etc.) you had to pay a lot to get these additional sales.
If you prefer having a climax then rather increase your sales by improving your conversion rate:
On the Internet, you'll find many articles that explain how to increase the conversion rate of web sites. You have to tweak some web page elements, you have to write good copy, your web site must be clean, visitors must be able to immediately see the benefits, etc.
After some tests, your conversion rate might go up to 3%. Depending on how your web site looked before, this is not hard to do.
Although you still have just 30,000 visitors per month you now make a total of $45,000 per month.
Your new conversion rate is 3%. That means that 900 of the 30,000 visitors will buy the $50 product from you. And you don't have to pay for traffic to get these additional sales.
Do you want $22,500 or $45,000?
It's much easier to increase your conversion rate than to increase your traffic. You can quickly change the contents of your web page and you can quickly test different options on your web pages.
Increase your traffic and you'll earn $22,500. Increase your conversion rate and you'll earn $45,000. To increase the conversion rate of your web pages, you just just to spend some time to learn and to tweak your web pages.
That's where AxROI comes in. AxROI tells you how many of your visitors buy something on your web site and how much they spend on your web site.
If you use AxROI with different landing pages you can quickly find the web page on your web site that delivers the highest conversion rate.
And you can safely enjoy having sex again :-)

Bear with me whilst I ramble on .........
One of the 'good' things about working online is that you can take a particularly badly designed web site and just delete it off of your web server and then change it.
Gasp, shock and horror I hear all the online veterans saying. Well, who cares, you should try it it may actually teach you something.
Okay - the experiment so far with Free Mail went as follows;
Originally Free Mail was intended to provide free email access, but, when I got tired of playing the 'recognise the spammer signing up' game and racing to delete their accounts before they created too much damage, Free Mail became an experiment in SEO and design techniques.
I started using Free Mail to see how much money could be made by using techniques recommended by the so called 'guru's'.
I can confess that some of them were definitely spammy, BUT, Free Mail never got banned.
When I moved servers a while ago, Free Mail was a site that showed up 404's too many times - my own fault as I should have checked and, as a result lost all of it's rankings.
So I just let it slide whilst I carried on with other stuff, after moving my money making pages to another more related domain.
Then I wanted to experiment with a blog and wanted it to have a South African Feel and went back to Free Mail where I installed B2Evolution, Why? First of all you can create more than one blog and secondly the out of the box image uploading was better than Word Press. Also B2Evolution didn't appear to have as many installs as Word Press - and I do like to support the underdog.
Later, I tacked the Searchable Directory on as well, as I would like to give South African Webmasters a decent directory back link to get their sites listed on the major search engines. Just like Ananzi was in the old days. Look at Ananzi now and you struggle to find the directory tucked away in all of the advertising. I swear that the advertising on the Ananzi front page takes up at least 95%.
Quite daunting it is, to start off with a site that has no page rank, no backlinks, no search engine listings at all and know that you have to convince the search engines to trust your site again as well as recover all of your search engine rankings.
I have made sure to NOT use any dubious techniques and only the optimisation of meta tags, images, urls etc. I have not even concentrated on getting decent back links, just, basically left it up to good initial SEO, good relevant, regular and unique content as well as that old healer of wounds; TIME.
Now, to the point of this post - I used a web site called Url Trends to see where Free Mail stood on at the end of March and looked back to see the trend today (5 months later) and I am glad to report that my love affair with Google seems to be on the mend and, in addition, my clandestine affairs with mistresses MSN and Yahoo are back on the boil.
Well, the requests for blog posts on South African Sites are coming in.
Here is another interesting one - search a number of search engines all at once. I particularly like the feature where you can compare the results you get on this site with the results from Google, Yahoo, Ask and MSN.
The 'COMPARE RESULTS' section opens up in a side by side set of frames - almost like a try before you buy feature.
If you want YOUR SOUTH AFRICAN web site (the domain name must be .za, dummy) to be featured on the Free Mail blog then drop me a line at alan [at] free-mail.co.za.
These guys promise all South African trademen a FREE web site and email address.
What is the catch?
ONLY that your domain name is not your own, although I see one or two FREE sites on the list that point to their own domain name and re-direct to the Trades.co.za site.
Pretty neat and clean sites that look well optimised to boot.
There is a reason why Links is spelled "Lionks" in the Title of this web site.
mmmmmm Not too bad - asof today's date three sites under my control / direction / call it what you like are on the FIRST page of results from Google South Africa.
Not too shabby Hey Nige!
Want to search the world of Yoga?
Pop across to this Port Elizabeth Yoga site and use their Swicki at the bottom of the page - Searching Only Yoga Authorities.
Quite frankly I don't know why someone would want to search for and find information on Rugby, considering the bumpy road that South African Rugby is on.
The Rugby Search web site seems to be bucking the trend or is it "Showing a Finger!" and supporting South African Rugby.
You get two facets here:
1. A search box that only searches the Rugby Sites as shown and,
2. Listings of relevant Rugby Sites.
Search Box compliments of Eruekster whoi run what is termed a Swicki - i.e. a Search Wicki.
Actually, who cares, search for something and make Rugby Search display the results that you want it to.
According to the web site; "The Church Of Googlism":
The Church Of Googlism believes a convincing argument can be made stating that the search engine Google is the closest mankind has ever come to experiencing an actual Deity. It is the ultimate bridge between people and information.
Many a true word said in jest !
Although the owner of the web site forgot to add a fourth commandment:
"Thou shalt not take the piss out of Google!"
Just to put your mind at ease - have a look at the forum thread on Search Engine Watch where poster asks what are the top 5 areas to first examine when asked to perform SEO on a site.
Even 'experts' disagree.
Makes me wonder if even the guys who write the algorithms can honestly say what factors have the highest influence!
Just when you were wondering if the folk at Google DID have a sense of humour, some crazy tit with nothing but time on his hands finds this Google April Fools Joke Page from the year 2000.
Have a look - humour is universal.
In case you are wondering how I stumbled across this page - it was quite simple really I did a search for 'dmoz' using the Eurekster Search box at the bottom of the www.free-mail.co.za home page and lo and behold the third result was for the April Fools Joke 2000.

Sometimes you come across a site that makes you say; "Absolutely Bloody Brilliant!"
You have to try this search box on Sail Search
If you have been following the brooha over AOL's 'unintentional' release of three months data then you will be very interested in the story posted in the New York Times, where a reporter tracked down AOL Searcher No. 4417749 and interviewed her.
Previous stories here and here.
Do you think that Ms. Arnold is going to stay with AOL after she had her search activity revealed?
It just seems that AOL is stumbling from one Public Relations Nightmare to the next - Remember the story about the guy who wanted to cancel his AOL subscription and taped the pushy 'retention' consultant - here?
Do you know the exact search terms people use on search engines to find your web site?
Do you know which search engines send you the most visitors?
Do you know how many of these visitors actually purchase something on your web site?
Now you can get the answer to these questions quickly and easily with the new AxROI version 2:
For example, AxROI gives you the answer to these questions:
* Through which search terms people find your web site in organic (unpaid) search engine results?
* Which search terms lead to the most sales?
* Which PPC ads work for you?
* which fixed price ads work for you (for example banner ads, newsletter ads, text link ads, all other online ads, etc.)?
AxROI helps you to make better search engine marketing decisions and it helps you to spend your advertising dollars wisely.

Make decisions based on facts, not assumptions
Tracking the effectiveness of your search engine listings is essential if you want to succeed with your online business. AxROI makes it as easy as possible for you.
Remember - the whole point of getting visitors to your site is so that you can get them to take action by either buying something, visiting a specific site, bookmarking, filling in a form, leaving their e-mail address etc.
If you have no way of measuring your return on investment then you are fighting a losing battle.
I am starting to see this site pop up all over the place.
Had a look at the directory and it really looks like nice - links are clean and STAND OUT. Not too many links on a page, easy to search.
The forum will need a bit of work to get people there and the gallery is a bit thin on images.
I really think the directory displaying addresses as well as phone, fax and cell numbers is a brilliant idea. I believe that if you ask nicely you can also get an additional 2500 HTML characters on the More Info link - lovely spider food. The direction that this Cape Town directory is going in seems to one that combines the best of traditional directories with a strong article component and a bit of a Content Management System thrown in.
And, yet, it still manages to look completely uncluttered.
Forgot to mention the weather forecast page - what a change from having to navigate past four or five screens and then seeing a synopsis. This one gives FOUR days of ACCURATE weather forecast for Cape Town AND Langebaan, above the fold and one click.
If you have ever experienced the joys of RSS newsfeeds you will surely agree with me that they can be a joy or a CURSE.
I find myself wanting to subscribe to many and then I never get a chance to actually digest the hundreds of posts that fly across my nose when viewing them in my Reader or via many of the aggregator's available.
What I really want is a collection of a maximum of twenty on one page online that I can view and digest quickly and with understanding.
Have at the look at the collection on the Axandra page that you can view - some pretty useful feeds there.
Turbo Mailer - this is a freeware copy of a commercial standard bulk email program. Being both free and shareware you may use the software for non-commercial use. Any commercial user of the program must register after an evaluation period of 14 days.
The setup and usage of Turbo-Mailer is mostly self-explanatory. After installation and start-up of Turbo-Mailer example_addresses.txt is already loaded into the Recipients list display of the Mailer Page. The second part of Turbo-Mailer is the email list processor, which is described in greater detail in the extensive help file: Some example user lists are already set up and ready for use after installation. Optionally Turbo-Mailer can be controlled by command line (batch runs).

Whilst you wait for the download to complete we recommend that you browse this extract from the help files provided with Group Mail:
Getting Started:
This getting started guide is intended to allow you to get started with the software quickly. Topics are described briefly within.
1. First things first - information you will require
2. Setting Up
3. Creating Groups
4. Adding Recipients
5. Preparing a message
6. Sending a message
7. Reviewing the results1. First things first - information you will require
You need to make sure that you have a fully functional Internet connection. The type of connection does not matter (DSL, Dialup, LAN etc.). With regards to dialup users often subscription accounts are the best. Most free ISPs do not offer the level of service you require. If you only have web access for instance then you will not be able to use software like Group Mail.
Once you have your connections issues sorted out you should seek the following details (not all are required).
SMTP Server: This is the address of the mail server you wish to use for sending your email. If you are using Group Mail Pro or Plus you can choose to send directly to your recipients. The best results however with regards to speed and reliability are obtained by sending through a dedicated Mail Server.
POP3 Server: This is the address of the server you connect with in order to download your email messages from. You require the details for this server if you wish to use the Subscriber Plug-in or if you are required to check your email before sending. Do not confuse this with a web based email service.
DNS Server: This is an integral part of any Internet connection and Group Mail can usually determine the address to use based on your current connection settings. This server is used to translate names (like www.infacta.com) into IP addresses (like 194.123.42.200) - Group Mail uses this service when direct sending only.
Next you will need to find out the following.
Authentication: You should ask who ever administers the SMTP Email Server you are using if you need to authenticate your connection before sending. Group Mail supports a variety of different Authentication protocols.
Limitations: You should also find out are there any limits on their service - some ISPs only allow you to send a certain number of messages per session. Others require that you use a certain email address as your From Address when sending. Group Mail can cope with all variations in these - to get it all going correctly though first time you will need this information.
Now with all that information available you are ready to configure and begin using the Software.
2. Setting Up
Identification Setup: The first thing you should do is tell the software who you are. Do this via the Identification Setup screen, available from the Setup Menu. more]
Email Setup: using the details collected above you should tell the software how it should send your messages. See Email Setup on the Setup menu. more]
Message Setup: control what encoding and character sets you want Group Mail to use when preparing your messages. This is very important for users who want to send binary information embedded in their messages and also for international users using non English languages. more]
Now you are ready to tell the software who you would like to send to.
3. Creating Groups
It should be noted that this is where Group Mail differs from regular email packages. Instead of you having to select each recipient that you want to send you, you select the group that contains those recipients. Before you can do this you need to create groups.
To begin you should switch to the Group Manager tab. Click the New button, give your group a name and click OK. (ignore the other options for now). Repeat this process as necessary and create as many groups as you like. Please note that you can create these groups any time you like. To modify or maintain them just select them and click on modify (you can right click on the group also to do this).
4. Adding Recipients
To add recipients to that group one at a time you should select it (click on it) and then choose the Add Recipient button which you can find at the bottom of the Group Manager tab - or you can also choose the Add button via the Browse screen (which can be entered via the Group Manager tab (see Browse or view and manage recipients button). Repeat this process as required.
To add recipients in bulk (say from a list or address book/data base) you should choose the suitable Import option from the Tools menu or the Group Manager Tab. Follow the Wizard instructions for further details.
5. Preparing a messageTo edit / prepare a simple message for sending you need to switch to the Edit Message tab. Basic message preparation is very simple. Just select the Group to send to, enter a Subject line for the message to send and type your message.
To add attachments click on the + button located at the bottom of the Edit Message tab - or use the insert menu.
To spell check your message using the default dictionary press the F9 button or click on the Tools Menu / Spell Check option.
By default the standard message type that Group Mail sends is a Text message with only header personalization. Please review the following links for further information regarding advanced message creation.
6. Sending a message
The fun stuff. Press F5, or click on the Prepare to Send button found at the bottom right hand side of the Main screen or on the File Menu. Group Mail will quickly validate your message and make sure that everything it requires is in place (settings as well). Next you will be presented with the Prepare to Send screen. This is where you can finalize your settings.
On the Prepare to Send screen you confirm the group you are sending to, the send mode to use and the email setup details. There are a host of other advanced features available on this screen which will be explained by the information found in the related links section.
As a rule of thumb you should always preview the message you are about to send - do this using the Preview/Test button found at the bottom of the Prepare screen - it is possible to preview the message in a variety of formats and you will be guaranteed to see the message as your recipients will.
Once you are happy with the settings and the message just click Send
7. Reviewing the results
While Group Mail is sending your message it is compiling a number of real time reports which record everything that happens during the send process. These details can be used to confirm mailings, check and diagnose errors, restart mailings and more.
This information is stored in the Logs folder in a text format - the Logs folder is located in the Group Mail folder.
When a mailing completes you get the chance to view each log file. Just select the log file you wish to view from the list available and click View. It is recommended that you save each file to a folder of your choice - why? these reports are overwritten each time you do a mailing.
The important log file is the one labelled Full Send Details log - this contains all important information from the mailing session. To restart or continue a mailing you need to save the sent log.
Well, this is what happens when you get deflected off of your purpose or goal that you set for the day.
Around two hours ago I picked up on the Fox Media | MySpace and Google deal. Then I decided to have a look at what else Google were doing and lo and behold came acros orkut.
Well the opening page splab says: "Join orkut to expand the circumference of your social circle."
Thanks guys, If I did have a social circle I would be happy to expand it, BUT, as I do not have any friends (all together now; "Aaaaaw Shame!") I will decline your generous offer to get a life and trundle back to the forum at MyPE. At least there I can reach out and touch the forum members if they give me a hard time.
Now - was or is the purchase of orkut by Google an attempt to establish a MySpace Rival?
News Corporation's Fox Interactive Media and Google Inc. today announced a multi-year search technology and services agreement whereby Google will be the exclusive search and keyword targeted advertising sales provider for Fox Interactive Media's growing network of web properties including MySpace.com (http://www.myspace.com).
The agreement calls for Google to power web, vertical and site specific search for MySpace.com and the majority of Fox Interactive Media properties. Google will be the exclusive provider of text-based advertising and keyword targeted ads through its AdSense program, for inventory on Fox Interactive Media's network. Google will also have a right of first refusal on display advertising sold through third parties on Fox Interactive Media's network.
There has been talk and speculation on blogs and in the industry about how to monetise the MySpace property. Apparently MySpace is not such a huge property in the Fox Media stable, though.
Under the terms of the agreement, Google will be obligated to make guaranteed minimum revenue share payments to Fox Interactive Media of $900 million based on Fox achieving certain traffic and other commitments. These guaranteed minimum revenue share payments are expected to be made over the period beginning in the first quarter of 2007 and ending in the second quarter of 2010.
$900 million over 3 and a bit years - now that is around 15% of Google's Turnover for the year 2005, so I suppose that we can expect Google's turnover to increase by around 15% for the period ending 2010 for this one deal ONLY.
Now this is where I get shaky and start to sweat - where is the next big deal going to come from as we all know that big steps need to be supported by natural and organic growth in business. Too many large deals have the potential to make the pyramid start bulging and topple - don't forget the base that you built Google on, Guys.
And for those South African Bandwidth users who horde their bandwidth and do not want to download nearly 500 megabytes of AOL Data you can go to the above search database and search for yourself - see explanatory story here: AOL Proudly Releases Massive Amounts of Private Data
I went to see what results people got when using the search term 'mype'. Then I tried a search to see what user 545605 searched on - I am guessing that if you know the subscriber number of an AOL user then you will be able to see what terms they searched on.
Very scary shit!
The utter stupidity of this is staggering. AOL has released very private data about its users without their permission. While the AOL username has been changed to a random ID number, the abilitiy to analyze all searches by a single user will often lead people to easily determine who the user is, and what they are up to. The data includes personal names, addresses, social security numbers and everything else someone might type into a search box.
Google now warns web surfers if they click on some search results.
If your web site is listed in the Open Directory Project (ODP, dmoz.org) then Google and MSN will often use the text that the ODP uses to describe your web site in their own search results.
Unfortunately, the descriptions in the Open Directory Project are often outdated and they don't reflect the current status of a web site. That means that your web site might be listed with an outdated description in the search results on Google and MSN.
How to get rid of the ODP description
Fortunately, there's a way to tell Google and MSN not to use the ODP description for your web site. You can direct Google and MSN not to use the ODP as a source by adding a new Meta tag to your web pages.
To prevent all search engines (that support the Meta tag) from using the ODP description for the page's description, use the following HTML tag:
META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOODP"
To specifically prevent Google from using this information for a page's description, use:
META NAME="GOOGLEBOT" CONTENT="NOODP"
If you just want to prevent MSN from using the description, use:
META NAME="msnbot" CONTENT="NOODP"
Note that once you add this Meta tag to your pages, it may take some time until a new description of your web page will appear in the search results of Google and MSN.
You might wonder why Yahoo does not support the NOODP tag. Yahoo operates its own directory so it does not need to pull the web page descriptions from the ODP.
There are many more Meta tags that allow you to influence search engines;
In addition to the new NOODP tag, there are many more Meta tags that allow you to influence how search engines handle your web pages.
For example, you can tell search engines where your business is located (that's useful for local search features), you can tell search engines if they should index a web page or not and much more.
We recommend IBP's Website Optimization Editor to add these tags to your web pages and to optimize the contents of your web pages. IBP's Website Optimization Editor allows you to quickly edit your web pages:
* Quickly change the web page title, the Meta tags, the link texts, the IMG ALT attributes etc. with a few mouse clicks.
IBP displays the keyword density in real-time so that you can quickly apply the perfect keyword density to all web page elements.
* Quickly add the new NOODP tag to all of your web pages so that Google, Yahoo and other search engines don't use the outdated Open Directory Project description of your web site anymore.
* Quickly create Meta tags for local search to your web pages. IBP supports regional Meta tags, Meta GEO tags and the Meta ICBM tag. Tell search engines the exact position of your business so that customers can find you.
The new NOODP tag is an easy way to tell search engines how to describe your web site in the search results. You should also use the other available Meta tags that are supported by search engines to make sure that your web site gets maximum exposure. If you haven't done it yet, download the latest IBP version here.
